BYLAWS AND POLICIES

Member Expectations

To gain and/or maintain membership in the Liberty University Pre-Law Society (PLS), members must comply with the following membership laws. Members are expected to comply with all codes of conduct, directives, and requirements set down by Liberty University, Title IX, Office of Resident Life, and the Academic Provost. Members are expected to comply with the Liberty Way at all Pre-Law Society events and in interactions with other members or board members. Academic suspension and/or expulsion may result in membership suspension.

  • Becoming a Member

    • Membership in the Pre-Law Society is contingent on completing the membership application and submitting dues. Dues are $20.00 payable at the beginning of the Fall Semester. Dues must be resubmitted at the beginning of the academic year and extend membership privileges through the Fall and following Spring semester. Graduating members are entitled to receive a PLS academic cord, provided they comply with the PLS academic and attendance policy

    • Membership dues cover the cost of all PLS events as well as any merchandise issued throughout the year (limits and restrictions may apply). Dues are non-refundable, although special circumstances may allow appeals of the policy, arbitrated by the PLS Board and faculty sponsor. In the event of suspension or expulsion from the PLS, dues are not refundable.

  • Attendance Policy

    • To receive a Prelaw Society academic cord, awarded at our end-of-year soiree to graduating members; Prelaw Society members must attend at least 50% of events in any given semester. This attendance policy does not apply to online students. Special circumstances may be considered.

Board Member Rights, Responsibilities, and Code of Conduct

Board Members are responsible for facilitating, coordinating, maintaining and planning all Pre-Law Society Events, Academic Resources, and Assets.

 

  • Board Member Responsibilities by Position

    • President: Responsible for overseeing all activities, assisting with coordinating events and purchases, and reporting to both SGA and the Faculty Sponsor.

    • Vice President: Responsible for assisting the President in overseeing all activities, assisting with coordinating events and purchases, and reporting to both SGA and the Faculty Sponsor.

    • Treasurer: Responsible for coordinating all budgetary matters, overseeing the collection of dues from members, monitoring the club payment portal, and maintaining the club roster and budget.

    • Secretary: Responsible for taking minutes at meetings, organizing the club’s files in Google Drive, and facilitating connection with member questions and feedback through the club email.  

    • Membership Director: Responsible for maintaining a club roster, coordinating club outreach, boosting club visibility on campus, and communicating with professors regarding club pitches given in undergraduate classes.

    • Events Coordinator: Responsible for spearheading and facilitating events, creating event purchase lists, and managing all the tasks associated with such. 

    • Online Student Liaison: Responsible for all PLS interactions with online members, including the following: emails, mailings, and online events. 

    • Marketing Director: Responsible for all social media communications via Facebook, Instagram, et cetera. Additionally responsible for creating graphics, marketing the club on campus, and other relevant tasks. 

    • External Affairs Director: Responsible for liaising with the Trial Advocacy teams, managing the Pre-Law Society Alumni Network, networking with potential club speakers, and managing communications for the annual Law School Fair.

    • Spiritual Director: Responsible for promoting a Christ-centered culture for all levels of the club, including the following: Corporate prayer, weekly newsletter devotionals, and mitigating conflict from a spiritual focal point.

Board members may assist each other in accomplishing their duties.

  • Election Procedure

    • Presidents and Vice Presidents may be appointed by vacating Presidents and Vice Presidents or by the Faculty Sponsor.

    • Vice President and all other board positions are selected by an application and interview process conducted by the club’s current President, Vice President, Interim President (if applicable), and Faculty Sponsor.

    • Board members are for one academic year: fall semester to spring semester.

    • Non-graduating board members may retain their position in the following year if merited. Board members may also elect to change their position at the end of the spring semester

  • Removal Procedure

    • Board members are automatically removed from the board once graduated.

    • Board members may elect to resign.

      • If a board member resigns, they must drop any CSER registration for the current semester.

      • A resigned board member may seek re-election in the next semester

    • In the event that a board member is not fulfilling their duties, the President, Vice President, and Faculty Sponsor in unanimous agreement reserve the right to suspend or remove that board member from their position. CSER registration may be revoked in the event of removal.

    • In the event of removal, emergency interviews may be conducted to replace that board member.

    • Disputes between board members are not grounds for dismissal. Disputes can be mediated by either the President, Vice President or Faculty Sponsor.

    • Grounds for dismissal include, but are not limited to:

      • Stealing, embezzling or misappropriating club funds in any circumstance. The Individual may be subject to legal prosecution.

      • Dereliction of duty, non-attendance in board meetings and slow/negative work output.

      • Conduct unbecoming of an officer i.e. severe violations of the Liberty Way, inappropriate behavior during board meetings or events, external legal prosecutions, etc.
